Crete - Greece PDF Print E-mail

Crete is the largest island in Greece and the second largest (after Cyprus) in the eastern Mediterranean region. Located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea, it covers an area of 8.336 km . The island is 260 km long and varies in width from 60 km (measured from the Dion cape to cape Stone), at only 12 km on the Isthmus of Ierapetra in eastern Crete. The coastline is a deeply geographical division, giving Crete over 1,000 km of coastline. It lies about 160 km south of the Greek mainland.

It is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Visitors can reach the island via two international airports, in Heraklion and Chania, as well as the smallest airport in Sitia, or by ship at the ports of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Kastelli Kissamos.

The population of Crete is 601,131 people (2001 census).
